TRUMP TRIALS! Top Ten Cartoons of the Week!

It’s hard to satirize the news and Donald Trump with headlines like, “Ex-president selling bibles to help pay legal cost of porn star hush money trial.”

Chris Weyant has had a lot of success poking fun at Trump. He had our most reprinted cartoon this week, a funny look at the former president’s various trials through the lens of the NCAA tournament.

Speaking of madness, the Republicans and Speaker Mike Johnson have just a one seat majority in the House, thanks to some recent retirements. As John Darkow suggests in his popular cartoon this week, now is definitely a good time for Congress to go on spring break.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. Chris Weyant

EASTER EXTRAVAGANZA: Top Ten Cartoons of the Week!

Easter was certainly on the minds of editors across the country this week, with four of our top ten most reprinted cartoons giving a nod to the religious holiday. Generally, editors and readers seem to enjoy holiday cartoons, while cartoonists typically hate drawing them.

Inflation was also a big story last week, with prices on just about everything continuing to rise. And editors remain uninterested in running cartoons about the war in Ukraine.

And here are the Top Ten …

#1

Bruce Plante took the #1 most reprinted spot, by a wide margin.

#2

John Darkow took second place with his first of two in the Top Ten.

#3

Dave Granlund took third place.

#4

Dave Granlund took 4th place too!

#5

Dick Wright claims the five-spot.

#6

Dave Whamond came in sixth.

#7

John Darkow nabs seventh place with his second cartoon in the Top Ten.

#8

Rick McKee took 8th place.

#9

Jeff Koterba takes 9th place.

#10

Dave Granlund wraps it up at number ten with his third cartoon in the Top Ten.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – April 3, 2021

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of the week ending April 3rd, 2021. Four cartoons are about Easter, five are about the pandemic and two are about infrastructure.

Congratulations to Rick McKee who ran well ahead of the pack with a strong first place cartoon. Congrats to Dave Whamond, Dave Granlund and Jeff Koterba who each have two cartoons in the Top Ten this week. Kudos to RJ Matson, Bill Day and John Darkow who also had most reprinted cartoons this week.

Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com. These are the cartoons that editors liked best, last week.

Our reader supported site, Cagle.com, still needs you!  Journalism is threatened with the pandemic that has shuttered newspaper advertisers. Some pundits predict that a large percentage of newspapers won’t survive the pandemic economic slump, and as newspapers sink, editorial cartoonists who depend on newspapers sink too, and along with them, our Cagle.com site.

The world needs political cartoonists more now than ever. Please consider supporting Cagle.com and visit Cagle.com/heroes.

COVID-19 Tsunami Coming

The coronavirus tsunami is coming soon, and President Trump’s plans for crowded churches on Easter and county by county closures is looking pretty stupid in the shadow of the oncoming wave.

I would have liked to make Trump smaller, compared to the wave, but there is only so much I can do to keep a cartoon readable at the small sizes it will often be reprinted in.

Readers may recognize The Great Wave off Kanagawa, perhaps the most famous Japanese woodblock print ever, by Katsushika Hokusai in the early 19th Century. I love the wave.

Trump and the Easter Bunny

There has been a lot of talk about Donald Trump’s foreign policy advisors. Trump says he consults himself on foreign policy issues, which makes for a nice Easter cartoon. The cartoon harkens back to Jimmy Stewart’s “Harvey” the invisible bunny friend.

Five Easter Cartoons About the 2012 Primary

I know a lot of cartoonists hate drawing holiday cartoons, but I always look forward to using the unique visual imagery every holiday has to offer in new and interesting ways.

As we’re in the midst of a contentious Republican primary for the party’s Presidential representative, I thought it’d be cool to post five cartoons weighing in on the race using Easter imagery. It’s just too bad they weren’t all drawn on eggs…

Easter According to Cam Cardow

Many cartoonists handle holidays very differently. Some prefer to use the opportunity to create funny gags, while others try to tie in the unique imagery to an event or issue that’s currently in the news.

Cam Cardow, the brilliant cartoonist for the Ottawa Citizen, has always treated Easter with a respect not often seen among the bunnies and chocolate candies. Many are more like illustrations than traditional cartoons.

I asked Cam to share his thoughts about his Easter cartoons, and here’s what he e-mailed me:

I don’t have an issue when a cartoonist expresses personal faith or a belief system in a cartoon. In fact, we do it all the time by aligning with certain social issues and political parties. I just happen to be a believer in the personage of Jesus Christ, his historical role, ancient origins, his death and ultimately, his resurrection. Regardless of my walk in this life, I know who he is and I will always acknowledge that in person and in my art. My belief of who he was and is a key component to who I am. Therefore, I publicly acknowledge it.

Here are some of his best Easter cartoons…
