Student Loan Relief: Top Ten Cartoons

This week, the subject of college debt was pushed front and center by President Joe Biden, who announced he would be canceling $10,000 in federal student loans per borrower. Not surprisingly, several of our most reprinted cartoons tackled the subject – both in support and critical of the administration’s plan.

Our most reprinted cartoon this week was on the start of football season, a funny one involving death drawn by Rick McKee.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. Rick McKee, Cagle.com

#2. Monte Wolverton, Cagle.com

#3. John Darkow, Columbia Missourian

My Favorite Ukraine Flag Cartoons

Here are my favorite Ukraine Flag cartoons, starting with three of my own.  The first is my memorial cartoon for Ukraine’s civilian deaths.

This one is on America’s support for Ukraine …

This is my first Ukraine flag cartoon, drawn 28 years ago in 1984 for the Muppets and Hasbro/Playskool. I claim this as the first Ukraine flag cartoon! (Considering that Ukraine was founded as an independent nation in 1991, 21 years ago.)

Here are more favorites by the CagleCartoonists …

This Picasso inspired cartoon is by Emad Hajjaj, from Jordan.

This Van Gogh inspired cartoon is by Emad’s brother, Osama Hajjaj, from Jordan.

This one is by Ed Wexler, from Los Angeles.

This one is by Kap, from Barcelona, Spain.

This one is by Hajo, from the Netherlands.

… and this one is by Jeff Koterba, from Nebraska.

Cartoons from our CagleCartoonist in Ukraine – Drawn as a Refugee

Here’s an update on our friend and world renowned editorial cartoonist, Vladimir Kazanevsky.  We syndicate Vlad’s work to newspapers, see a complete archive of his work here.

Vlad and his wife fled from their home in Kiev last week because of the bombing around them. Vlad tells me he’s waiting for his sons and grandchildren to leave the city. Vlad says he doesn’t plan to leave Ukraine and he writes that he “believes in Ukraine’s victory,” but emphasizes that he “must emigrate rather than live under a Putin regime.” Vlad writes, “Cartoon art is a strong weapon in fighting for Peace. Many thanks to cartoonists from all over the World who help people to open eyes on Putin’s terroristic regime.”

Since he left his studio behind, Vlad has been doing line drawings on the road in Ukraine, and he has been sending them to us by email from his cell phone.  Here’s is the cartoon he sent today …

And two from last week, as a refugee …

Twitter Distraction

President Trump isn’t doing well in the polls. As the virus gets worse, Trump has silenced his coronavirus task force and has been looking for distractions to move the news away from harping on his virus failures as the death count passed 100,000.

Trump’s latest distraction has been Twitter, which finally bowed to criticism and put an innocuous link to more information, next to a tweet where Trump lied about voter fraud. This is raw meat for Trump’s base that doesn’t like those rich, liberal, San Francisco social media companies. Trump’s Executive Order against Twitter is inconsequential, but his deception lured the media and lots of the cartoonists into taking Trump’s bait, drawing non-coronavirus cartoons about Trump vs Twitter as the death toll passed a milestone. Here’s my cartoon.

Here are a selection of five Trump vs Twitter cartoons drawn today and yesterday …

Kevin Siers

Dave Granlund

Bart van Leeuwen

This cartoon is by Stephane Peray, who draws as “Stephff” in Thailand (internationally, cartoonists prefer to use only one name, like Cher, Madonna, Lassie or Flipper). Stephff is a long time contributor to our little syndicate; he used to have a thriving freelance business drawing cartoons for newspapers around the world. Now Stephff has given up editorial cartooning because all of his papers have dropped his cartoons as a cost cutting measure. I was actually surprised to see that Stephff uploaded this new one today, just for us. The newly accelerated decline of newspapers, and by extension, editorial cartoons, is a grim, worldwide phenomenon. Our reader supported site, Cagle.com, and our editorial cartoonists need your support to stave off the death of our art form.

Best of the Grim Reaper –Part 3

This is part three of a collection of my favorite coronavirus Grim Reaper cartoons. The Reaper (or “Death” for short) is a standard cliché for editorial cartoonists; he is a character that belongs to every cartoonist, like, Uncle Sam, Lady Liberty and the donkey and elephant …

Blame China! Part 2

Here is part two of our BLAME CHINA cartoons!  See part one with cartoons defending China pushing against criticism. Since we hear so much about China from the Trump administration, it is interesting that most of the China bashing cartoons come from the international cartoonists.

TRUE Stupid Stuff 2!

Here’s another new batch of my old TRUE cartoons from the 1990’s – at least the ones that look like they could still be true. This is from a batch about government.

TRUE Life Stuff!

This new batch of my old TRUE cartoons is about our crazy lifestyles here in America. Things in our lives haven’t changed much since I drew these – except for the televisions. And phones.

TRUE Crazy Stuff 3!

Most of this new batch of my old TRUE panels came from my collection about entertainment and celebrities. I ended up killing most of these cartoons because they were so stale. I forget how different things were back in 1995. This edited batch of cartoons makes 1995 seem not so different from today – even though one cartoons shows a guy reading a book on the toilet; we may not read books anymore, but toilets haven’t changed much.

Star Trek is still familiar 23 years later. Mattel’s Barbie is still popular, but other toys in my TRUE cartoons are forgotten – for example Barney the Dinosaur was big in 1995. I forgot all about Barney. The first cartoon below is about Lassie, who we remembered as a doggie celebrity back in 1995. Do people remember Lassie now?
