Christmas Cheer! The Top Ten Cartoons of the Week!

Elf on the Shelf? Meet Bot on the Cot.

Jeff Koterba’s A.I.-inspired twist on an annual holiday tradition was our most popular reprinted cartoon this week, as we inch closer and closer to Christmas.

A number of our cartoons carried a holiday theme, including Bob Englehart’s funny take on Santa being accused of weaponizing Christmas and Rivers’ amusing image of Joe Biden getting uncomfortable with St. Nick.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. Jeff Koterba

#2. Bob Englehart

#3. Chris Weyant

#4. Rick McKee

#5. R.J. Matson

#6. Gary McCoy

ELECTION CHOICES: TOP TEN CARTOONS OF THE WEEK

We’re about a month away from the first votes in the Republican primary being cast in Iowa, and it’s safe to say the country isn’t very excited about the likely choices for president.

Joe Biden, the incumbent, will likely face Donald Trump in a rematch of the 2020 election, which Biden won by more than 7 million votes. Our two most popular cartoons this week were about the lack of enthusiasm at the top of both presidential tickets. It’s going to be a long year.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. Chris Weyant

A Mixed Bag – Top Ten Cartoons

This week, editors chose a mixed bag of topics for their op-ed pages, everything from NASA’s moon mission to Brittney Griner’s release to Kyrsten Sinema leaving the Democratic Party.

Yet despite everything going on in the news, this week’s most-reprinted cartoon was about a universal subject everyone hates – high gas prices. Though not enough to go out and buy electric cars, apparently.

#2. Jeff Koterba

#3. Rivers

Christmas Crunch – Top Ten of the Week

It’s the most wonderful time of year, until you check out the price of gifts for Christmas.

Inflation might be slowing down, but prices are still high and a number of our most popular cartoons this week touched on the expensive costs of gifts this holiday season.

Another popular subject was former President Donald Trump suggesting we rip up the Constitution and redo the 2020 election. I’d go into the reasons he cited, but they’re just as fictional as Santa himself.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

hmmm … We’re COVID Cheerleaders? Top Ten COVID Cartoons

Researchers like to categorize and count things. Most of the few scholarly studies of editorial cartoons involve making subjective judgements about cartoons to divide the cartoons into categories selected for the study.

I gave Political Science professor Dr. Jody Baumgartner full access to our archives to do a study on editorial cartoons about Coronavirus. Baumgartner and his colleague Dr. Hanna Kassab categorized and counted only CagleCartoons.com content, and their study has just been published; see it here.

The study asked if political cartoonists are “Critics” or “Cheerleaders.” The researchers studied only CagleCartoons that were about COVID during the time of the pandemic.

The conclusion of the study? Political cartoonists are “cheerleaders” for the establishment. We prefer to think of ourselves as critics.  Calling us “cheerleaders” sounds a bit rude.

Perhaps Baumgartner and Kassab are conservative and were looking for more cartoons bashing Dr. Fauci, resisting mask mandates, promoting conspiracy theories, and shilling Hydroxychloroquine, Ivermectin, injected bleach and anti-vaxxer nonsense.

Here are the ten most reprinted pandemic cartoons since 2019. (Keep in mind that editors like for us to be cheerleaders for truth.) Congratulations to Jeff Koterba for taking four out of ten, and to Rick McKee and Dave Granlund for each having two on the Top Ten!
