Pollsters – Top Ten Cartoons of the Week!

Pollsters were on the minds of cartoonists this week, as we inch closer and closer to the 2022 midterm elections. Unfortunately, American’s won’t have a say in the makeup of the Supreme Court, despite the institution’s plunging approval ratings.

Editors also went with cartoons about Vladimir Putin and his continued invasion of Ukraine, especially after his suggestion about the use of nuclear weapons last week.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. Jeff Koterba, Cagle.com

#2. R J Matson, Cagle.com

#3. Dick Wright, Cagle.com

#4. Dave Granlund, Cagle.com

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – March 5th, 2022

This was another frustrating week for editorial cartoonists as editors preferred light cartoons to the many, hard hitting cartoons about about Russia’s evil invasion of Ukraine.

Here are the cartoons that editors chose to print – for the seven days ending  March 5th, 2022. Congratulations to Dave Whamond who took the #1 spot this week and was also the most reprinted cartoonist of the week.  And kudos to Jeff Koterba  who has two cartoons in the Top Ten.

Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com. These are the cartoons that editors picked last week.

Our reader supported site, Cagle.com, still needs you!  Journalism is threatened with the pandemic that has shuttered newspaper advertisers. Some pundits predict that a large percentage of newspapers won’t survive the pandemic economic slump, and as newspapers sink, editorial cartoonists who depend on newspapers sink too, and along with them, our Cagle.com site.

The world needs political cartoonists more now than ever. Please consider supporting Cagle.com and visit Cagle.com/heroes.

#1

Dave Whamond took the #1 most reprinted spot, by a wide margin.

#2

Jeff Koterba took second place with his first of two in the Top Ten.

#3

John Cole took third place.

#4

Daryl Cagle (that’s me) nabbed 4th place.

#5

John Darkow claims the five-spot.

#6

Randy Enos came in sixth.

#7

RJ Matson nabs seventh place.

#8

Bob Englehart took 8th place.

#9

Bruce Plante takes 9th place.

#10

Jeff Koterba wraps it up at number ten with his second cartoon in the Top Ten.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – August 1, 2020

Here are the ten most widely published cartoons of the week (July 25 through August 1, 2020). As usual, no drawings of President Trump are among the most reprinted cartoons –and we had lots of cartoonists draw Trump this week.

Christopher Weyant takes the the #1 spot, running away with the week by a wide margin!

No one has two cartoons in the Top Ten list this week, so kudos to our other nine cartoonists with the most reprinted cartoons this week:  Jeff Koterba, Rick McKee, John Cole, RJ Matson, Steve Sack, Dave Granlund, John Darkow, Nate Beeler and Bruce Plante.

Our Top Ten is a measure of how many editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 62 cartoonists in our syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com.

#1

Congratulations to Christopher Weyant, who drew the #1 most reprinted cartoon this week!

#2

Jeff Koterba takes second place.

#3

Rick McKee takes the #3 spot. There are two Biden cartoons in the Top Ten this week. There are very few cartoons drawn about Biden, and clearly editors would like to see more.

#4

Steve Sack is part of a three-way tie for 4th place.

#4

Here’s RJ Matson, also tied for 4th place.

#4

John Cole shares 4th place with a “back to school” COVID cartoon, still a popular topic with editors.

#7

Here’s Dave Granlund in seventh place with another “back to school,” COVID cartoon.

#8

John Darkow is in 8th place. Trump’s crazy comments about his simple cognitive test were a popular topic with editors, but only if the cartoons didn’t show Trump.

#9

Nate Beeler takes the #9 position with the second Biden cartoon on the Top Ten, and the second cognitive test cartoon.

#10

Bruce Plante takes the ten spot.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – July 25, 2020

Here are the ten most widely published cartoons of the week (July 18 through July 25, 2020). As usual, no drawings of President Trump are among the most reprinted cartoons.  Seven cartoons were related to the pandemic this week, sports and Back to School remain the most popular sub-topics.

Rick McKee returns to the Top Ten this week, taking the top spot by a wide margin.  Dave Whamond and Jeff Koterba dominated yet again with two cartoons each in the Top Ten.

Congratulations to the other cartoonists who made the Top Ten this week, Steve Sack, Peter Kuper, Bob Englehart and Kevin Siers. (One of my own cartoons just barely slipped in at #10.)

Our Top Ten is a measure of how many editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 62 cartoonists in our syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com.

#1

Congratulations to Rick McKee who drew the #1 most reprinted cartoon this week.

#2

Steve Sack takes second place with the popular Back to School with COVID theme!

#3

Dave Whamond takes the #3 spot with his John Lewis obit cartoon. A number of CagleCartoonists drew great John Lewis portrait style memorial cartoons, but Dave’s was the first one that was posted and the early bird gets third place as editors were clearly eager to get this cartoon printed as soon as possible, and then weren’t interested in a similar portrait obit cartoon after they printed this one.

#4

Jeff Koterba is tied for both 4th and 5th place this week.

#5

Here’s Jeff Koterba again, with an impressive second cartoon in the Top Ten, which is not unusual for Jeff.

#6

Peter Kuper takes sixth place.

#7

Here’s Dave Whamond with his second cartoon in the Top Ten this week – a feat that also isn’t unusual for Dave.

#8

Bob Englehart is tied for 8th place with this COVID sports cartoon, a popular topic with editors now.

#8

Kevin Siers also tied for 8th place.

#10

My own (Daryl Cagle) cartoon barely slipped in at #10.

BASEBALL 2020!

The crazy, pandemic-shortened, crowdless baseball season just started! We got the news that President Trump would be throwing out the first pitch at a New York Yankees game in August, so I drew this one. I thought the gag was a little dull, so I added a talking dog. Talking dogs always work.

Gotta love baseball!  Here are my favorite, new baseball cartoons from the CagleCartoonists!

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – April 18, 2020

We had a tie for the most popular cartoon this week (April 11 – 18) here are both. Scroll down for the next EIGHT of our ten most popular and most reprinted editorial cartoons from last week (which are below the video).

Cagle.com needs your support!
I’d like to urge all of our fans to contribute to Cagle.com at this difficult time. We don’t run advertising in our newsletters or on Cagle.com  –we depend on our readers for support. Now our small business (CagleCartoons.com) and the editorial cartooning profession as a whole, are facing possible extinction as our newspaper clients are suddenly failing. Newspapers are simply not paying their bills as their advertisers have been shut down during the pandemic. Please take a look at our Cagle.com/Heroes page, take a look at my video below, and consider making a contribution. If enough fans make a small, monthly contribution, we can save Cagle.com and keep our cartoonists drawing, at a time when the cartoons are more important than ever. We need you.

Please visit Cagle.com/Heroes and be a Cagle.com Hero!

Here are the rest of the top ten most popular cartoons from last week! Steve Sack has THREE cartoons in the top ten this week!

Jeff Koterba has TWO cartoons in the top ten this week.

Dave Granlund, who had a cartoon that tied for most popular of the week (above), has a SECOND cartoon in the top ten.

This popular cartoon is by John Cole.

This popular cartoon by John Darkow rounds out the top ten.

Tomorrow we’ll have part two of the BLAME CHINA cartoons (see Blame China! Part One in case you missed it), and then we’ll have a new remembrance by my cartoonist buddy, the legendary Randy Enos.

Thanks everyone – we love you all and appreciate your support!

TRUE Stupid Stuff!

Here’s a new batch of my old TRUE cartoons. I’m disappointed that so many of these are are dated and don’t hold up over time. I think the stats have only gotten worse in the past 20 years. I’m this batch, there must be twice as many taxing agencies, and the national debt must equal four times the number of grains of surface sand on Jones beach, times $2. I’m putting these up on PoliticalCartoons.com and CagleCartoons.com and I see that newspapers are starting to run them. I hope those newspapers aren’t counting grains of sand.

Garage 7: TVtoons!!

Some 20+ years ago I drew a weekly, quasi-autobiographical comic strip called, “TVtoon!!” for the British national TV Guide/Entertainment magazine “TV Times” and a national TV guide magazine in Australia.
I changed our names, but it is clearly our family and my kids, Susie and Michael were 7 and 13 years old in the strip. Things have changed a lot in 20+ years – those were simpler times! Open each image in a new window for a bigger version.

Moment of Silence

This cartoon is about the congressional baseball shooting, and is based on a cartoon I drew six years ago about the Gabby Giffords shooting. Things don’t change much.

Taylor Jones and Fox News

I was troubled to see a cartoon by our own Taylor Jones, on the front page of FoxNews.com in what seems to be a screenshot of the congressional baseball game shooter’s Facebook page, along with the headline: “HISTORY OF HATE.” I thought it was unfair of Fox News to put Taylor in that spot.

Steve Sack, the Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist for the Minneapolis Star-Tribune commented, “It could have been any cartoonist’s work there. They’re using a deranged moron’s actions to stifle satire. I’ve seen attacks on TV comedians today as well. Hang in there, Taylor.”

Steve is correct about the right focusing their ire on satire. Conservatives thrive on talk radio where liberals haven’t been able to find an audience because the nature of liberal discourse is different – morning zoo radio and late night comedians are where liberals commune. We would rather laugh at Colbert or Saturday Night Live than listen to hours of Rush Limbaugh preaching reassuringly to his choir. Liberals can laugh at themselves, while conservatives laugh at liberals. This is something we see in totalitarian states around the world, as over half of the world’s population lives in a nation that doesn’t allow cartoonists to draw their nation’s leader. Conservatives and despots both have trouble laughing at themselves. This is a worry to me when Trump talks about limiting press freedoms, and when the media picks up the right’s criticism of satire. I suspect we’ll see more examples of conservative media lumping cartoonists together with monsters.

I’m told that CNN has been repeatedly showing Taylor’s cartoon from the gunman’s Facebook page this morning.  Taylor sent me these comments …

• The fact that the alleged assailant had posted his comment, that Trump is a “mean and disgusting” person, right above my cartoon … Well, that’s the point I’ve been trying to make about Donald Trump all along. I’m less bothered by Trump’s somewhat quixotic policies, than with the impression I have that our president is a thoroughly repugnant individual. I think it’s possible that Hodgkinson might have posted numerous cartoons of mine, and others who’ve been very personal in their depictions of Trump, because of that recurrent theme.

• If any cartoonists, or perhaps all of us, and even more so Stephen Colbert or Rachel Maddow, helped propel Hodgkinson to his final, violent act, however minor our actual influence, it might be because Trump has personalized the presidency more than any president in our lifetime. (Perhaps Andrew Jackson, Trump’s new political hero, was on that par). Trump’s truly making these current moments of American history…all about him. And that has made reactions to Trump, whether from cartoonists or comedians, coalminers or violent madmen, all the more personal.

Talk about being juiced! For years, cartoonists have been drawing cartoons about that cheating, steroid-injecting egomaniac Barry Bonds. Now, the lawyers have caught up with everyone else, convicting the former Giants slugger of obstruction of justice.

To check out how cartoonists have depicted Bonds sincd breaking Hank Aaron’s home run record*, check out our new Bonds is Guilty cartoon collection.
