Trump, Jackson, Tubman, Punch and Judy!

Last week the Treasury Secretary, Steve Mnuchin, announced that the “issue” of the new $20 bill featuring Harriet Tubman replacing president Andrew Jackson, would “most likely” not “come up again” until 2026 –or in other words, it is never going to happen. This is no surprise.

President Trump is known to be a big fan of our plantation-slave-master president, Andrew Jackson. Trump keeps a portrait of Jackson in the Oval Office and personally identifies with our seventh president, who, like Trump, rejected and pushed back against an independent judiciary. Jackson is perhaps best known for forcing Native Americans onto reservations West of the Mississippi, through the brutal “Trail of Tears” which ran adjacent to Jackson’s plantation in Tennessee. Jackson reportedly never stepped out into his backyard to observe the wretched sight.

Harriet Tubman was an escaped slave who bravely worked to help countless other slaves escape through the “Underground Railroad,” a network of anti-slavery activists and safe houses. Tubman also served as an armed scout and spy for the US Army during the Civil War.

I decided to draw Trump making his $20 bill decision as a Punch and Judy show. To be fair, Trump isn’t going to lose any votes among his base for this decision, and he isn’t going to get votes from African Americans anyway, so what the heck?

Here’s the cartoon I drew, back in the good old Obama days, when it was first announced that Harriet Tubman would be replacing Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill.

Presidents and Santa

Every year the president sits on Santa’s lap in cartoons from scores of editorial cartoonists. Here’s my Trump in Santa’s lap cartoon for 2018 …

I enjoy these!  Here are a few of my presidential, Santa’s lap oldies; the first one is from 2012 with Santa Obama and Republicans on his lap.

Here’s another Obama-Santa from simpler times. Looking at this I think I should draw the same concept again, with Trump-Santa, which would be funnier.

The next one is from 2007, with President Bush. I think George W. Bush was a worse president than Trump, but he didn’t seem to suffer from the torrent of criticism that Trump does, even as he started a big war, killing hundreds of thousands and leaving a mess that haunts us today.

This Bush-Santa cartoon was from the previous Christmas in 2006.

Just looking back on these makes me want to draw more Santas.

WhiteFish and the White House

Every so often a really stinky fish looms over the White House. I have to draw a similar cartoon every seven years or so. Today’s stinky fish is “Whitefish Energy,” the two employee company in WhiteFish, Montana that happened to win a $300,000,000 exclusive contract from Puerto Rico to maintain their electrical system. Why this little company won a contract like this is a mystery to the White House. Interestingly, the tiny town of Whitefish, Montana (population 7.279) is the hometown of the Secretary of the Interior, Ryan Zinke, and some are wondering if this could be a reason why the little company landed this big contract. Here’s an article with some other interesting Whitefish facts.

Whitefish Energy employs about 300 contractors who are working on tens of thousands of miles of downed power lines in powerless Puerto Rico. Not nearly enough people for the job, but their exclusive contract is keeping more workers out. Sounds stinky to me.

In the past my stinky fish has reared its rotting head for both the Obama and George W. Bush administrations. Here’s my stinky Solyndra fish from 2011, depicting a stinky green energy company that blew through $500 million dollars of taxpayer subsidies before turning belly up.

The stinky fish for the Bush administration in 2007 was the Iraq war …

It looks like we should expect another fish to descend in another five or six years. Keep your eye (or nose) out for it.

Here’s how my Whitefish cartoon looks today in USA Today.

Caduceus Campfire!

President Trump pulled the funding rug out from under ObamaCare, which may not have been failing before, but is much more likely to fail now. Trump supporters claim that this is to light a fire under Congress to fix the problem – more likely, it will just light a fire under the healthcare system, leaving it scorched – like a marshmallow over the campfire.

I love the caduceus symbol for medicine, with the two snakes and the little wings at the top of a pole – it is a wonderful cartoon cliché that allows me to do healthcare cartoons without words. As healthcare poses existential political issues that divide the Republicans, I’ve had plenty of opportunities to bash the elephants with caduceuses.

Obama took a bite out of the Republicans by pushing ObamaCare through congress without a single Republican vote.

Obama took a moment to gloat.

Republicans can’t agree on healthcare, and likely won’t get anything done, leading Trump to blow the system up. Perhaps congress will be more willing to clean up a big healthcare mess of Trump’s making; they can always blame it on Obama.

More likely, I think healthcare will be the issue that sinks the Republican party.

Trump Christmas

Trump will have a nice Christmas morning!

This Christmas morning scene is something I bring back every four or five years. Here’s an oldie from a Christmas when the GOP was suffering from some Obama successes …

Here’s one from when Obama was eager to get Obamacare through congress, back in 2009.

The next one is from back in 2001 – before I had settled on a good caricature of George W. Bush, when 9/11 was still fresh and all the talk was about the hunt for Osama Bin Ladin.

Notice that there are thick, cathode ray TVs in W’s holiday stash? This cartoon is fifteen years old. Times have changed.

Gotta love Christmas morning!

Obama and Payday Lenders!

Payday lenders are a blight on society, charging the poor hundreds of percent interest rates and trapping them in a never-ending spiral of debt. I hadn’t been aware of the problem until I first moved to Nashville and was stunned to see a payday lender on almost every block. There must be more payday lenders than restaurants in Tennessee!

Today I’m taking a holiday from my usual Obama bashing as the president is using his executive authority to impose proposed, crippling regulations on the payday loan industry that may put the whole, evil vampire’s nest out of business. Bravo, Obama!

The pundits on Fox News are holding their breath, turning blue, waiting for Obama to say the words, “Islamic Terrorists.” It may be a long wait.

I’ve gotten comments about how there appears to be nothing inside of Obama’s head. I wasn’t really thinking about making him be brainless, rather I was thinking of his skull as something of an echo chamber.

This cartoon was the product of my first try at live streaming the process of my drawing a cartoon. I had some tech difficulties, particularly with the sound. And I see that I will need to develop a new skill set for talking constantly while I draw. I should do a little better next time, solving these problems as I go along. Take a look at the YouTube video of my drawing session below. If the streaming is popular I’ll set up a regular time for it in the future. In the meantime, I’ll announce on Facebook and Twitter when I’ll be going live on YouTube.

The Inside Story on Obama’s Meeting with Netanyahu Today

It is no secret that Obama and Netanyahu don’t like each other, and it is amusing to watch them act like they are buddies – therefore today’s cartoon …

And here’s the rough sketch …

sketch700

I don’t draw Netanyahu very often, so I had to do Google Images to see what he looks like, and I erased his face two or three times before I thought I got close enough. Notice that the final Netanyahu face is much better than the sketch – that always happens with me. I stare at the Google Images Netanyahu faces as I’m tracing the final line art and it gets closer to the right caricature with another step. I went in a different direction with his big nose than I see other cartoonists do – I’m still not sure about that.

Notice that when I’m free-handing something like this, I don’t get it right. Obama is too high and Netanyahu too low for their eyes to meet, so I noted that Netanyahu needed to stretch up to make eye contact and I made the correction as I was tracing it. I never just trace, I’m always redrawing, which can be frustrating, because my natural inclination would be to continue redrawing forever. Rough sketch Obama was looking pretty lousy here too – that’s why artists don’t like to show their rough sketches – rough sketches are lousy!

There you have it, the inside story on the meeting of Obama and Netanyahu today!

Freedom Bakery!

Republicans are very concerned that bakers have the freedom to refuse service to gay couples who want to buy wedding cakes. Now that marriage equality is the law of the land, our attention is turned to the poor, abused bakers.
