Here are Jeff Koterba’s Top Ten cartoons of the year that were most reprinted in newspapers. Jeffrey Koterba is a cartoonist, writer, musician, and creativity advocate. A cartoonist for The Omaha World-Herald from 1989 to 2020, his award-winning work has appeared in publications the world over, and have also gone into space. Entertainment Weekly called Jeff’s memoir, Inklings, “…a powerful and moving portrait of an artist.” He is lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter for the Prairie Cats, a swing and jump-blues band.

Top Ten Cartoons of 2020

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of the year, 2020. We have about 700 newspapers in the USA that subscribe to our CagleCartoons.com syndicate service and we collect data on which cartoons newspaper editors download; these cartoons were the biggest hits – each was the #1 cartoons the week it ran.

The most reprinted cartoons of the year provide a clear lesson in what newspaper editors wanted to see with five of the cartoons explicitly about the pandemic and a couple of others generally about bad times. The cartoons emphasize how much editors want to see cartoons about holidays and events (Christmas, New Year, Election Day, Daylight Savings Time Day, change of season). The cartoons also clearly show how most newspaper editors tend to avoid cartoons about politics and president Trump, to the frustration of the political cartoonists.

What is most amazing about the Top Ten cartoons this year is the stellar performance of Dave Granlund who took the #1 and #2 spots with the most reprinted cartoons of the year. Jeff Koterba, Dave Whamond and I have two cartoons each on the list.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – December 26, 2020

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of last week (December 19th through December 26th 2020).

There were no big, dominating hit cartoons this week, with all of the Top Ten cartoons performing moderately well and tightly bunched. We saw a transition from Christmas themed cartoons to New Years cartoons. Seven of the ten cartoons allude to the pandemic and stay-at-home orders.

The Top Ten cartoons are what most readers see since only 20% of the cartoons get 80% of the reprints.

John Cole won the week with a snowy/COVID/remote-learning cartoon. Rick McKee and Jeff Koterba are impressive with two cartoons each on the Top Ten list.

Congratulations to the other cartoonists with the most reprinted cartoons of the week: Bill Day, Dave Whamond, Dave Granlund, John Darkow, and Dave Fitzsimmons.

Election in the Courts

Trump and his minions are scrambling for a way to throw the election into the courts with claims of widespread fraud.

This is a revised version of a cartoon that I drew earlier when Justice Antonin Scalia died.

This wouldn’t be the first time for the Supreme Court to decide to give the presidential election of a Republican. Back in 2000 the decision came as a blow to Al Gore.

The 5-4 court decision was pretty outrageous. This could be the second time a partisan court decides to stop a vote count (or re-count) and decide the winner, if Trump has his way.

At that time I was a regular, local, daily cartoonist for Gannett’s Honolulu Advertiser newspaper in Hawaii. On the day that the Supreme Court decided to make George W. Bush president, I drew this cartoon that my newspaper refused to print.

I defaced the justices who voted to make George W. Bush president. I was pretty angry that day.

Anything can happen. It already has.

Get Rid of the Pollsters

What is it about pollsters and how wrong they get everything? This presidential election wasn’t supposed to be close. Democrats were supposed to have a shot at winning the Senate and picking up seats in the House. The pollsters are wrong more than they are right. Lets give pollsters the boot.

Too Close to Call!

Editors Want You to VOTE

Newspaper editors love nothing more than a general call to action for readers to vote. Cartoons urging readers to vote are among the most reprinted of all the cartoons. Here’s my new “vote cartoon.”

People like for me to post my rough sketches, so here you go.

I wasn’t happy with Uncle Sam so I drew him over twice. Lincoln and Liberty needed to be taller, but I didn’t redraw them, I just made an indication to remember to make them taller on the final line version. I looked at some photos of Lincoln and his dark, little eyes, so I changed Abe’s eyes, but I like the bigger eyes in the sketch better; I should have gone with the bigger eyes.

This Dave Granlund cartoon from last week is our most reprinted cartoon since we started keep these stats at the beginning of the year.

These “VOTE” cartoons are also among our most reprinted cartoons this year. This one is by John Darkow.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – October 17, 2020

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of last week (October 10th, through October 17th, 2020). As usual, no drawings of President Trump were popular with newspaper editors. Typically 20% of the cartoons get 80% of the reprints; this week it is more like 10% of the cartoons getting 90% of the reprints as less popular cartoons got little or no ink and editors flocked to the same cartoons.

My own cartoon from last Sunday was #1 this week, by a big margin; in fact, it is the most reprinted cartoon since we starting keeping comparative download stats from subscribing newspaper editors at the beginning of the year.

Dave Whamond also stood well above the crowd with a #2 cartoon that would have been a strong #1 in any other week. Dave and I both had two cartoons on the Top Ten this week. Congratulations to the other cartoonists who made the unusually hot Top Ten this week, Dave Fitzsimmons, Steve Sack, Dave Granlund, Rick McKee, Kevin Siers and RJ Matson.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – September 12, 2020

Here are the ten most widely published cartoons of the week (August 29th through September 5th, 2020).

This was a rare week where a Trump cartoon made it into in the Top Ten (the #8 cartoon by Rick McKee). Six of the cartoons are about the pandemic.

Congratulations to John Cole for nabbing the #1 spot; John’s census cartoon ran away with the week, far ahead of the pack. Congrats to John Darkow for scoring a double with the #6 and #8 cartoons.

Here are the most popular cartoons from February. 20% of the cartoons get 80% of the reprints in newspapers, because editors tend to like the same things at the same time. Editors also tend to like the same, small pool of cartoonists, even though all of our cartoons and cartoonists are presented to editors in the same way –so these are the cartoons that got the vast majority of reprints in American newspapers last month.
