EASTER EXTRAVAGANZA: Top Ten Cartoons of the Week!

Easter was certainly on the minds of editors across the country this week, with four of our top ten most reprinted cartoons giving a nod to the religious holiday. Generally, editors and readers seem to enjoy holiday cartoons, while cartoonists typically hate drawing them.

Inflation was also a big story last week, with prices on just about everything continuing to rise. And editors remain uninterested in running cartoons about the war in Ukraine.

And here are the Top Ten …

#1

Bruce Plante took the #1 most reprinted spot, by a wide margin.

#2

John Darkow took second place with his first of two in the Top Ten.

#3

Dave Granlund took third place.

#4

Dave Granlund took 4th place too!

#5

Dick Wright claims the five-spot.

#6

Dave Whamond came in sixth.

#7

John Darkow nabs seventh place with his second cartoon in the Top Ten.

#8

Rick McKee took 8th place.

#9

Jeff Koterba takes 9th place.

#10

Dave Granlund wraps it up at number ten with his third cartoon in the Top Ten.

More Doggie Presidents

This is my new one about all the foreign policy landmines that President Trump is laying for the Biden administration.

I drew a Trump Doggie cartoon yesterday and I was thinking about doggie presidents. Today’s cartoon is based on one I drew about President George W. Bush about 14 years ago.

I’ve drawn lots of presidential doggies. Here’s an oldies with doggie Obama.

When Hillary Clinton was running for president against Obama, she had her husband Bill as her attack dog.

Early in the George W. Bush administration, doggie Jimmy Carter opposed and undermined Bush’s Cuba policy, visiting Castro in Cuba.

I draw foreign doggie presidents too. Here’s Cuba’s doggie Fidel Castro from about 14 years ago.

Here’s an oldie with Israel’s doggie Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu peeing on Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas while being “condemned” by President Obama.

I can’t get enough of doggie presidents, but that’s not true of newspaper editors. A sure way to make sure your cartoon won’t get reprinted in newspapers very much is to draw a doggie president –also, drawing urine is something newspaper editors don’t like.

Drawing doggie Presidents and urine isn’t a smart business decision for editorial cartoonists; we do it for love.

Blame China! Part 2

Here is part two of our BLAME CHINA cartoons!  See part one with cartoons defending China pushing against criticism. Since we hear so much about China from the Trump administration, it is interesting that most of the China bashing cartoons come from the international cartoonists.

Blame China! Part 1

President Trump has recently been more vocal in blaming China for the coronavirus, as have many voices in the media. China is blamed for being slow to respond to the virus, for silencing Chinese critics and for releasing dubious statistics and propaganda. There are reports that American intelligence agencies are investigating claims that the virus escaped from a lab in Wuhan that was studying the virus in bats. China has pushed back hard against these accusations and we can see the blame game clearly in our cartoons.  This is the first of two “Blame China” collections of cartoons.

Cartoon by Arcadio Esquivel, Costa Rica

I’m starting out with the cartoons from Luojie, our CagleCartoonist from Beijing who draws for The China Daily, China’s state owned, national English language newspaper. Loujie draws the Chinese government’s official point of view, pushing back against the criticism coming from America.

Interestingly, most of the “blame China” cartoons come from international cartoonists and few come from American cartoonists, even though China focuses on criticism coming from the USA.

See BLAME CHINA! Part 2

Only one other CagleCartoonist takes the Chinese point of view, Hajo from France …

All the rest of the cartoonists have jumped on the “blame China” bandwagon …

The next three come from our Dutch, photo-realistic cartoonist, Bart van Leeuwen …

Much to Juggle!

Presidents as clowns are a cartoon cliché that we’ve all drawn. They never get old. Here’s my new juggling Trump …

Way back in 2006 I also drew president Bush as a juggling clown. It looks like Iran and North Korea are still being juggled after 13 years. (I could have added quite a few more countries, but Trump’s four are most talked about at the moment.) Trump makes me miss George W. Bush.

Belts and Roads and Xi

As part of China’s drive to dominate Asia, Xi Jinping’s “Belts and Roads” initiative is tying up third world countries with unsustainable debt for dubious infrastructure improvements. Here’s my cartoon.

This cartoon will surely be banned in China. In fact, images of Winnie the Pooh are broadly censored in China because of memes depicting Chinese president Xi Jinping as Winnie the Pooh. This seems like a benign metaphor, but Winnie isn’t very smart and often gets his head stuck in the honey jar, so I can see why Winnie might annoy Xi. Here’s another recent one …

I think I’ll keep drawing Xi as Winnie the Pooh, just because of the allure of being censored in China. Xi is a great cartoon character, not just because he murders America’s spies and imprisons millions of Muslims and political dissidents, but because of Winnie the Pooh. This guy just makes me smile.  Here’s another Xi cartoon, showing Xi with his despot friends …

Xi’s not as funny when he’s not Winnie the Pooh.

If anyone in China can see my Xi the Pooh cartoons, please let me know and send me a screenshot – or send me a screenshot of what it looks like when my cartoons are censored in China.

I shouldn’t bash China too hard, lots of places censor my cartoons. Our whole site is blocked in Pakistan and Iran, and occasionally in other nations.  If Cagle.com or particular cartoons on our site are blocked in your country, please let me know and send me a screenshot!

Catalonia Peeing Bull

I’ve drawn lots of peeing dog cartoons. One of my favorite oldies is George W. Bush as a dog marking his territory around the world. So naturally I wanted to draw a bull, as Spain, peeing on Catalonia. The problem is, that on the map, Catalonia is in the upper right hand corner of Spain, and for the Spanish bull to pee on Catalonia I would have to have the Spain-Bull stand in France, which doesn’t make much sense. The bull could be standing up to pee, in an arc up to Catalonia, but that’s a little nasty. We have a new “no penises” policy here at Cagle Cartoons, which means that strategic parts of the bull have to be concealed.

So I settled on the doggie style leg up peeing, with the map of Spain in perspective and the pee puddle above the bull. I know that’s a stretch.

Here’s my old favorite Bush peeing cartoon. Bigger map. Smaller doggie. No puddle under the doggie.

Sometimes it’s hard to pee when geography gets in the way – so my Catalonia cartoon is not one of my best. Still, I look to draw peeing “doggies” whenever I can.

Trump, Climate Change and the World

Here is Trump and the world.

Yes, that is a map of the world on the globe’s head. I always wonder if things like that are clear enough. On the black and white version I put a label on the “World”.

Labels are for sissies, but without the color globe wasn’t clearly a globe.

Hey! It is nice to be back home and drawing cartoons again! More on the way!
