Putin After the Wagner Rebellion

Russia was crazy last week and that made for some crazy-great political cartoons. Here is a batch of my favorite new ones.

The first is one I drew, of the Russian Coat of Arms with the two headed eagle, that doesn’t get along very well with himself now. He’s cursing and calling himself a traitor in Russian.

We often see this two-faced, golden eagle in the middle of Russia’s “tri-color” flag, behind Putin as he’s giving a speech, looking like this.

Our anonymous cartoonist, Rivers, drew a shrinking Putin …

Bill Day had another take on shrinking Putin …

Putin got some backfire from John Darkow …

Pat Bagley put it into a diagram …

And Shooty, our cartoonist in Slovakia, drew this one with Putin and Pregozhin wrestling in a pool of blood.

Dave Whamond saw through the whole thing …

I’ll post some more great ones as they come in!

Pollsters were on the minds of cartoonists this week, as we inch closer and closer to the 2022 midterm elections. Unfortunately, American’s won’t have a say in the makeup of the Supreme Court, despite the institution’s plunging approval ratings.

Top Ten Cartoons of September 16th, 2022!

While cartoonists have been covering the invasion since February, Ukraine’s counteroffensive against Russia last week drew new attention on a conflict that’s raged on for nearly seven months.

This week’s most reprinted cartoon was a funny poke at the debate over daylight saving time drawn by cartoonist Guy Parsons. Back in March, the U.S. Senate passed a bill that would make daylight saving time permanent starting in 2023. But like everything else in Washington these days, nothing has happened since.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

Inflation Irritation: Top Ten Cartoons of the Week

Inflation remains a ripe topic for cartoonists, as prices of just about everything continue to rise across the country. It’s a good thing most cartoonists have gone digital, otherwise they’d be hit hard by the cost of paper and ink.

In other news, Russia’s war in Ukraine is still going on, with Putin and his forces unable to overwhelm the country’s defenses. And Sunday is Mother’s Day, in case you’d forgotten.

Oscar Slap Flap!

The boring Academy Awards suddenly got more interesting when Will Smith “slapped” Chris Rock – something that looked more like an assault than a slap. Smith was outraged by an rude joke about his wife and has since apologized for assaulting Rock, who is is not pressing charges.  Smith went on to win the Oscar for Best Actor and gave a tearful acceptance/apology speech.

The incident also made editorial cartoons more interesting.  Here is a collection of the best Oscar Slap cartoons!

Rick McKee, Cagle.com, Georgia

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – March 25th, 2022

We’ve made a few changes to the Top Ten of the Week. It turns out that our subscribing editors like the Top Ten and some have been using it as a weekly cartoon round-up, so I decided to make this into a column which ran for the first time last week.  It now counts the stats from Wednesday to Wednesday.  Look here and you can see what this looks like as a column.

TOP TEN CARTOONS OF THE WEEK

Editors prefer cartoons about high gas prices and inflation, but a few more cartoons about the war in Ukraine crept into our Top Ten list of the most reprinted cartoons of the week.

The most popular is actually No. 2, a rearview mirror COVID cartoon by Jeff Koterba, which straddled two weeks so it didn’t hit No. 1, but it was reprinted in over 250 newspapers – that’s a lot.

At Cagle.com, we’ve been syndicating editorial cartoons for over twenty years, and we’ve amassed an archive of over 250,000 cartoons. Every few years there’s a spike in gas prices and these are the cartoons editors want to publish, so I looked back over two decades for some oldies that might look fresh today.

I found some great high gas price cartoons by Tab, a great, retired, Canadian cartoonist who used to draw for the Calgary Sun. I sent these to newspapers looking as fresh and new as they did 17 years ago. That’s one of Tab’s gas price cartoons at No. 9, and editors liked all of Tab’s cartoons.

High gas prices never get old.

#9. Tab, Cagle.com

#10 . Guy Parsons, Cagle.com

Cartoons from our CagleCartoonist in Ukraine – Drawn as a Refugee

Here’s an update on our friend and world renowned editorial cartoonist, Vladimir Kazanevsky.  We syndicate Vlad’s work to newspapers, see a complete archive of his work here.

Vlad and his wife fled from their home in Kiev last week because of the bombing around them. Vlad tells me he’s waiting for his sons and grandchildren to leave the city. Vlad says he doesn’t plan to leave Ukraine and he writes that he “believes in Ukraine’s victory,” but emphasizes that he “must emigrate rather than live under a Putin regime.” Vlad writes, “Cartoon art is a strong weapon in fighting for Peace. Many thanks to cartoonists from all over the World who help people to open eyes on Putin’s terroristic regime.”

Since he left his studio behind, Vlad has been doing line drawings on the road in Ukraine, and he has been sending them to us by email from his cell phone.  Here’s is the cartoon he sent today …

And two from last week, as a refugee …

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – March 5th, 2022

This was another frustrating week for editorial cartoonists as editors preferred light cartoons to the many, hard hitting cartoons about about Russia’s evil invasion of Ukraine.

Here are the cartoons that editors chose to print – for the seven days ending  March 5th, 2022. Congratulations to Dave Whamond who took the #1 spot this week and was also the most reprinted cartoonist of the week.  And kudos to Jeff Koterba  who has two cartoons in the Top Ten.

Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com. These are the cartoons that editors picked last week.

Our reader supported site, Cagle.com, still needs you!  Journalism is threatened with the pandemic that has shuttered newspaper advertisers. Some pundits predict that a large percentage of newspapers won’t survive the pandemic economic slump, and as newspapers sink, editorial cartoonists who depend on newspapers sink too, and along with them, our Cagle.com site.

The world needs political cartoonists more now than ever. Please consider supporting Cagle.com and visit Cagle.com/heroes.

#1

Dave Whamond took the #1 most reprinted spot, by a wide margin.

Cartoons from Ukraine

We’re proud to syndicate the work of Vladimir Kazanevsky, Ukraine’s top editorial cartoonist. He now finds himself on the front lines of a war with Russia, and I thought this would be a good time to showcase the work of our brave and talented friend.  Here are Vlad’s latest cartoons about the horror of Vladimir Putin and the threat from Russia.

Vlad has has probably won more cartooning awards than any other cartoonist in the world.  See our complete archive of Vlad’s work here. Ukraine’s resistance is inspirational, as is the work of Ukraine’s brilliant cartoonist.

Here I am with Vlad in his Kyiv studio, standing in front of his trophy case, filled with awards from cartooning contests he has won – he’s got more trophy cases – they don’t all fit in one room.
