Pollsters – Top Ten Cartoons of the Week!

Pollsters were on the minds of cartoonists this week, as we inch closer and closer to the 2022 midterm elections. Unfortunately, American’s won’t have a say in the makeup of the Supreme Court, despite the institution’s plunging approval ratings.

Editors also went with cartoons about Vladimir Putin and his continued invasion of Ukraine, especially after his suggestion about the use of nuclear weapons last week.

Sports Social Distancing 25 Years Early

I was flipping through some of my oldies and I noticed something interesting – that I was drawing cartoons about social distancing and the pandemic issues that sports are dealing with now, and I drew these cartoons 25 years ago!

I used to draw an advertising, sports, comic strip that ran weekly in USA Today across the top of one of their sports pages. This was a strip called “Out of Bounds” that I drew for Sega. The ads were wide and thin. Each one had to be drawn on deadline to be topical with the sports news of the day, and the advertising agency had to approve it in advance, so my deadlines were tight. And each comic had to promote a SEGA Sports product.

What I found interesting, looking back on these, is that my gags were most often about reworking sports so players could play online and fans could participate online, without physical contact. I guess this was just the natural gag, since I was selling game systems, but it struck me funny that I was 25 years ahead of my time. Here are a couple of examples from baseball and football season.

Of course, those people in the stands are just paper cut-outs.

The more things change, the more they stay the same!

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – August 1, 2020

Here are the ten most widely published cartoons of the week (July 25 through August 1, 2020). As usual, no drawings of President Trump are among the most reprinted cartoons –and we had lots of cartoonists draw Trump this week.

Christopher Weyant takes the the #1 spot, running away with the week by a wide margin!

No one has two cartoons in the Top Ten list this week, so kudos to our other nine cartoonists with the most reprinted cartoons this week: Jeff Koterba, Rick McKee, John Cole, RJ Matson, Steve Sack, Dave Granlund, John Darkow, Nate Beeler and Bruce Plante.

Our Top Ten is a measure of how many editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 62 cartoonists in our syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com.

Rick McKee takes the #3 spot. There are two Biden cartoons in the Top Ten this week. There are very few cartoons drawn about Biden, and clearly editors would like to see more.

John Darkow is in 8th place. Trump’s crazy comments about his simple cognitive test were a popular topic with editors, but only if the cartoons didn’t show Trump.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – July 25, 2020

Here are the ten most widely published cartoons of the week (July 18 through July 25, 2020). As usual, no drawings of President Trump are among the most reprinted cartoons. Seven cartoons were related to the pandemic this week, sports and Back to School remain the most popular sub-topics.

Rick McKee returns to the Top Ten this week, taking the top spot by a wide margin. Dave Whamond and Jeff Koterba dominated yet again with two cartoons each in the Top Ten.

Congratulations to the other cartoonists who made the Top Ten this week, Steve Sack, Peter Kuper, Bob Englehart and Kevin Siers. (One of my own cartoons just barely slipped in at #10.)

Dave Whamond takes the #3 spot with his John Lewis obit cartoon. A number of CagleCartoonists drew great John Lewis portrait style memorial cartoons, but Dave’s was the first one that was posted and the early bird gets third place as editors were clearly eager to get this cartoon printed as soon as possible, and then weren’t interested in a similar portrait obit cartoon after they printed this one.

BASEBALL 2020!

The crazy, pandemic-shortened, crowdless baseball season just started! We got the news that President Trump would be throwing out the first pitch at a New York Yankees game in August, so I drew this one. I thought the gag was a little dull, so I added a talking dog. Talking dogs always work.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – July 18, 2020

Here are the ten most widely published cartoons of the week (July 11 through July 18, 2020). As usual, no drawings of President Trump are among the most reprinted cartoons. This week has the usual steep curve between the most popular cartoons and all the rest. Only five cartoons were related to the pandemic this week, four cartoons featured sports in some way, and there were two Back to School cartoons.

Gary McCoy takes the top spot by a wide margin, with an unusual Joe Biden bashing cartoon that doesn’t show Biden or Trump –something that seems to be a requirement among editors. Dave Whamond dominated again this week with three cartoons in the Top Ten, all part of a crazy four-way tie for second place. Pat Bagley impresses with two cartoons on the list this week.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – July 11, 2020

Here are the ten most widely published cartoons of the week (July 4 through July 11, 2020). As usual, no drawings of President Trump are among the most reprinted cartoons. Also, this week we’re back to the typical pattern of a steep curve, where the most popular cartoons with newspaper editors far exceeded all the other cartoons in reprints. Seven of the Top Ten are about coronavirus, with three about “back to school,” which is a topic that editors love right now.

Dave Whamond dominated this week with #1 and #2 cartoons that far outpaced the others on the list with close to twice as many reprints as the rest. John Darkow has an impressive three cartoons in the Top Ten this week. Dave Granlund also has an impressive performance with two cartoons on the list. Kudos to the three other cartoonists who made the Top Ten this week, John Cole, Jeff Koterba and Bruce Plante. Great work, gentlemen!

If I was drawing this gag I probably would have put president Trump in the place of the generic economist and it occurred to me that if John had done that, this cartoon probably wouldn’t have made it into the Top Ten. Drawings of Trump make newspaper editors run the other way.

Here is John Darkow‘s second of three cartoons in the Top Ten. Color cartoons get more downloads from editors, so this one really hit the editorial sweet spot to make it into the Top Ten. Editors love “back to school” cartoons about the pandemic.

Trump Knocked Out!

President Trump backed down and the partial government shutdown ended last Friday. Conservative and liberals both see this as Trump “caving” and House Speak Pelosi winning the confrontation. TRUE Stupid Stuff!

Here’s a new batch of my old TRUE cartoons. I’m disappointed that so many of these are are dated and don’t hold up over time. I think the stats have only gotten worse in the past 20 years. I’m this batch, there must be twice as many taxing agencies, and the national debt must equal four times the number of grains of surface sand on Jones beach, times $2. I’m putting these up on PoliticalCartoons.com and CagleCartoons.com and I see that newspapers are starting to run them. I hope those newspapers aren’t counting grains of sand.
