TRUE Stupid Stuff!

Here’s a new batch of my old TRUE cartoons. I’m disappointed that so many of these are are dated and don’t hold up over time. I think the stats have only gotten worse in the past 20 years. I’m this batch, there must be twice as many taxing agencies, and the national debt must equal four times the number of grains of surface sand on Jones beach, times $2. I’m putting these up on PoliticalCartoons.com and CagleCartoons.com and I see that newspapers are starting to run them. I hope those newspapers aren’t counting grains of sand.

TRUE Crazy Stuff 2!

Here’s another batch of my TRUE syndicated newspaper cartoons from 1995. I’m culling out the cartoons that are not too stale to include in our PoliticalCartoons.com database and making little changes so that don’t seem too dated; sometimes that is hard and I have to delete some of my favorite oldies. I’m letting quite a few old style TVs and land line phones sneak through.

I suppose it is more interesting that so little has changed.

TRUE Business

These are some of my old TRUE! cartoons from 1995. I used to draw this as a syndicated daily panel for Tribune Media Services syndicate, which is now Tribune Content Agency because they named another company “Tribune Media Services.” I used to pour over stats in news reports and draw them into cartoons. These are really true, except the art, and the selection of the facts amounts to commentary.

I drew TRUE! for about a year, so I have hundreds of these cartoons and as I was going back through the archives, I thought I would start adding some that still look fresh to our PoliticalCartoons.com database. This first batch for the database is on the theme of business.

I should add that back in 1995, Tribune Media Services didn’t allow the artists they syndicate to have their own web sites. Those were early days for the internet and most cartoonists hadn’t created their own sites yet. I started Cagle.com in 1996, as soon as I wriggled out from under Tribune Media Services and their “no web sites” policy.

Pied Piper

When President Trump described illegal immigrants as infesting America, I remembered an old cartoon I drew early in 2015 with Trump as the Pied Piper. Of-course, the Pied Piper legend was about a goofy troubadour who played his “pipe” to rid a town of rats, then, as the result of a payment dispute, he led the children out of town. Trump’s recent executive order that supposedly stopped jailing immigrant children seems to do little or nothing about the kids, who will continue to be imprisoned, one way or another –perhaps on military bases.

I lived in New York in the 1980s, and Trump was a big, local celebrity; he was a thin playboy, before he turned orange, and it took me some time to realize that present day plump-Trump doesn’t look much like the Trump I knew. Trump has filled out his figure and trimmed his formerly giant, bushy eyebrows. I had a svelte 1980s Trump in my memory as I drew this oldie with Trump entrancing the Republican Party.

Now it bothers me to look at this one. Looking at the kids in cages bothers me more.

Roach Man!

My rock musician son, Michael “Mac” Cagle, asked me to do a cover for his new single, “Roach Man.” You can listen to more of my rocker son at Punkrockopera.bandcamp.com and download his whole album; his Facebook page is at facebook.com/punkrockoperaproject. And here’s a short MP3 clip from the Roach Man song, which is not yet completed:

That’s the Roach Man below.

Michael gave me lots of art direction while I drew this as a live stream on Twitch.tv/darylcagle – watch in the video below.

Punk Rock Opera!

Yesterday I live-streamed drawing a CD cover for my rocker son, Michael’s new album, “Punk Rock Opera.”  The album isn’t finished yet, but you can hear one of Michael’s earlier songs, and see an earlier album cover that I drew for him here: https://honeybeejackson.bandcamp.com/album/death-steers-the-train-2015-single

Want to see me draw this one? It took an afternoon, and you can see it in real time in two parts below!

And here’s part two …

Different Takes on Death of Whitney Houston

Last night, many people were shocked to discover that famed by troubled singer Whitney Houston was found dead in her Los Angeles hotel room yesterday afternoon. Some cartoonists have been quick to respond, and while the first wave of obituary cartoons about famous celebrities are usually very positive, today’s cartoons seem to have run the gamut of emotions about the talented singer who wrestled with drug addiction most of her career.

It’s also interesting to note that all of the cartoons that have come in to Cagle.com so far have been from international cartoonists, which speaks to the degree of fame Houston achieved in her career.

First, is the typical nice, uncontroversial remembrance cartoon that most readers seem to enjoy, drawn by Australian cartoonist Peter Broelman:

Next is a cartoon that attempts to access both the good and bad of Houston’s troubled career, drawn by another Australian cartoonist, Peter Lewis:

Finally, is a cartoon by South African cartoonists Jeremy Nell that goes right for the jugular by tackling Houston’s drug addiciton head on.
