Top Ten Cartoons – New Green Deal

Last week, President Joe Biden announced he will pardon thousands of Americans federally convicted of marijuana possession. It didn’t take long for cartoonists to twist the acronym POTUS into fun riffs on pot and new green deals.

The upcoming midterm elections were also on the minds of cartoonists and editors last week. While cartoonists love the candidates and craziness that comes with national elections every couple of years, for most voters Nov. 8 can’t get here soon enough.

California and Saint Serra Statues

My cartoon today depicts the bear on the California flag pulling down a statue of Junipero Serra, the controversial Catholic saint who oversaw the opening of nine missions in colonial California. Serra participated in the Spanish Inquisition and enslaved native Americans, imprisoning them at his missions. Statues of Serra have been vandalized recently as many protests toppling statues commemorating racist historical figures have swept the nation, and the world, in the wake of George Floyd’s murder.

The California bear is something of an “everyman” character. I like seeing the movement to purge symbols honoring racist, historical figures; perhaps it is a bit of wishful thinking on my part to see California’s “everyman” tearing down Serra since there is quite a bit of support for defending the many Serra statues that dot our state like a pox. President Trump is using an executive order to boost penalties for defacing racist, historical monuments. My depiction of the California flag today is more a symbol of hope that these protests succeed than than a depiction of today’s reality.

The statue is based on one located in San Juan Capistrano that was relocated recently to protect it from protesters. I lifted Serra’s robe a bit so that I could get some Saddam Hussein action going with his ankles.

When I was in third grade I was required to build a model of a California mission and I was taught a false, fairy tale story about Padre Serra. Thirty years later my kids went through the same thing in school. California students have been required to build those models and have been fed a whitewashed version of history for many decades. That may be changing now as the protests continue. Maybe our “everyman” bear will finally tear down that statue!

Updated Oldies! Trump! Marijuana! Peace!

The problem with being a cartoonist who runs a little newspaper syndicate is that I have to actually run the little newspaper syndicate. I envy cartoonists who can work in their little cubicles, drawing cartoons all the time – as my life is sucked away with bookkeeping and administrative duties. Argh! On the other hand, by having a little business I’m safe from being laid off by a newspaper again. I’ve traded having a boss for having dozens of cartoonists and freelancers depending on me to keep the business going. Again, argh!

So, I haven’t been drawing as many new cartoons as I would like during this busy political season. This week, while I was finishing up my belated business taxes, I dredged up a couple of oldies that seem fresh now. The first is a Muhammad cartoon-cartoon, updated to be a Trump cartoon that reflects the comments I get in my email box, from those “deplorables in a basket.” Here is what the cartoon originally looked like, at the right.

The second oldie this week is a repost of a California Marijuana oldie that I drew some years ago when California legalized medical marijuana. In November California votes on a referendum to legalize recreational marijuana, and the cartoon is suddenly fresh. What is old is new again.

In addition to the oldies, I drew a 10th birthday card for my friends at Cartooning for Peace. The big hands on star French cartoonist, Plantu’s dove logo, make me smile. That’s the Cartooning for Peace logo on the right, and my birthday card below. Happy birthday, Cartooning for Peace!

My local altie newspaper, the Santa Barbara Independent, printed this on the back page of their current issue – there it is below. I thought it looked pretty good. The colors always darken up in print, so I try to use light, fruity colors in my cartoons; they hold up better.
