Great New Global Warming Cartoons!

We have a cool – yet hot – new Caglecast about Global Warming with three brilliant, award winning cartoonists discussing their cartoons about our growing climate apocalypse. See the podcast here:

Pat Bagley has been the brilliant, cartoonist for the Salt Lake Tribune in Utah since 1979. Pat has won a ton of awards including the Herblock Award and he’s also a shining star in our profession.

Graeme MacKay is the brilliant cartoonist for the Hamilton Spectator in Ontario, Canada and he’s won a ton of awards too.

Rod Emmerson is the brilliant cartoonist for the New Zealand Herald since 2003, before that he was an Australian cartoonist and he’s won tons of awards too, including two Australian Stanley awards for best editorial cartoonist.

Where are the Teachers? Top Ten of the Week

For the first time in a while, inflation and gas prices weren’t the top concerns among the nation’s cartoonists this week. Instead, editors plucked cartoons on topics like the country’s teacher shortage and a heat wave that scorched much of the country.

China, Brittney Griner, a surprising abortion vote in Kansas – plenty of subjects made it to the drawing board this week. Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons:

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of the week ending  September 18th, 2021. Congratulations to Rick McKee who drew the most popular cartoon of the week! Rick’s cartoon was reprinted in about 160 newspapers. Rick was also the most reprinted editorial cartoonist of the week overall. Rick and Dave Whamond both have two cartoons in the Top Ten.

Top Twelve Cartoons of the Week – August 21st, 2021

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of the week ending  August 21st, 2021. For the second week in a row our cartoons performance graph is remarkably flat, with lots of cartoons performing well and no cartoons dominating the choices of editors.

Kudos to both Kevin Siers and Jeff Koterba who tied for the #1 cartoons and for having two cartoons each in the Top Ten; and congrats to Dave Granlund for having three cartoons in the Top Twelve, as well as for being the most reprinted cartoonist of the week.

With a flat graph and more cartoons performing at close to the same number of reprints, we get a lot more ties – this week I posted a Top Twelve (instead of a Top Ten) since we had a four-way tie for 9th place.  The relatively flat graph is a healthy trend and I like seeing more cartoons performing relatively well. Congratulations to all!

Too Close to Call!

Heat Wave!

It is predicted to hit 109ºF (43ºC) today at my house in Woodland Hills, California. Yesterday we saw the all time, USA, high temperature of 130º (54C) in Death Valley California – today will be even hotter! We’ve had rolling blackouts as the electrical grid is overloaded and fires are popping up around the state, with a fire tornado filmed and lightening strikes setting many small fires. It is predicted to be hot like this for the next three days.

So, on a day like this I turn to our oldies. Even with the Post Office crisis and virtual Democratic Convention raging, it is hard to think of anything other than the heat. I went back over the past 20 years of cartoons looking for some nice, heat wave cartoons that didn’t look too stale, and I reposted them for newspapers today. Here’s my own Republicans and Global Warming denial cartoon, and my favorite, evergreen heat wave cartoons, rereleased today.

Taylor Jones Decade!

UKRAINE!

Every day the news is full of Ukraine, Ukraine, Ukraine. We just can’t seem to get enough Ukraine.

We have a great CagleCartoonist from Ukraine, Vladimir Kazanevsky, who has probably won more international cartooning competitions than any other cartoonist in the world –but the international competition world is a different world, with different aesthetics that seem strange and foreign to an American reader.

I noticed that Vlad hadn’t posted any cartoons about the Ukraine/impeachment scandal and I told him that he is the only cartoonist from Ukraine that American readers are likely to see. Vlad’s perch in Kyiv could make his cartoons interesting to Western editors. Vlad then uploaded these three.

It looks like this jester-trap will draw Trump in as he is lured into watching himself on TV.

Here the jester appears to be Ukraine’s brain that is commanding heavy-Trump-the-elephant’s attention.

Vlad’s cartoons are charming, although I must admit that I don’t really understand most of them. This is typical of the international contest cartoonists who have a different cartoon language that doesn’t make much sense to Americans like me. Charming, though.

Here are selections of some of Vlad’s cartoons that I can understand – the first one shows refugees fleeing from a repressive regime.

 

This one shows our climate-change future.

 

Here man struggles with oil.

 

Putin doesn’t seem happy as his cold, Russian Trump-Vodka seems to have turned into poop, which doesn’t go well with caviar.

 

This charming cartoon shows animals who seem to be demonstrating in favor of their own predators.

All of this is only to show that Vlad is great, but I’m not surprised that we don’t see cartoons from Ukraine in American newspapers even while Ukraine dominates the news.
