Midterms Approach: Top Ten Cartoons of the Week

We’re a little more than a week out from Election Day, and inflation remains one of the biggest issues of the midterms. Everything just seems to keep getting more and more expensive.

Of course, the election itself is a great topic for cartoons. Election deniers, unfit candidates, polarization – unfortunately there’s a lot of material for cartoonists to work with.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. Chris Weyant, Boston Globe

#2. Dave Whamond, Cagle.com

#3. Dave Granlund, Cagle.com

#4. Pat Bagley, Salt Lake Tribune

#5. John Darkow, Columbia Missourian

#6. Rivers, Cagle.com

#7. John Darkow, Columbia Missourian

#8. Jeff Koterba, Cagle.com

#9. Dave Granlund, Cagle.com

#10. Dave Whamond, Cagle.com

Different Worlds – Top Ten Cartoons of the Week

The Top Ten most reprinted editorial cartoons this week again show the stark contrast between what newspaper editors want, what cartoonists want to draw and what we are seeing on the TV news.

Cartoonists want to draw cartoons about Vladimir Putin and the war in Ukraine, which is dominating the television news. Editors have little interest in cartoons about the war. In the past week, only one popular cartoon mentions the war or mentions Putin, in a combined gag about Will Smith and President Biden. It seems like editorial cartoonists and newspaper editors are living in different worlds.

Historians look back at editorial cartoons as a window on their times, reflecting the concerns of readers about the issues of the day; this no longer works, and stopped being true during the Trump administration, when cartoonists were all drawing Trump, who dominated the news while editors had little interest in running editorial cartoons depicting Trump.

Here’s a graph showing the relative number of reprints, and you can see how editors preferred Dave Granlund’s cartoon about Netflix much more than the rest.  Congratulations, Dave!

And here are the Top Ten …

#1

Dave Whamond took the #1 most reprinted spot, by a wide margin.

#2

Rick McKee took second place with his first of two in the Top Ten.

#3

Jeff Koterba took third place.

#4

John Cole nabbed 4th place.

#5

Dave Whamond claims the five-spot with his first of two cartoons in theTop Ten.

#6

Adam Zyglis came in sixth.

#7

Dave Whamond nabs seventh place with his second cartoon in the Top Ten.

#8

Rivers took 8th place.

#9

John Darkow takes 9th place.

#10

Rick McKee wraps it up at number ten with his second cartoon in the Top Ten.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – March 25th, 2022

We’ve made a few changes to the Top Ten of the Week. It turns out that our subscribing editors like the Top Ten and some have been using it as a weekly cartoon round-up, so I decided to make this into a column which ran for the first time last week.  It now counts the stats from Wednesday to Wednesday.  Look here and you can see what this looks like as a column.

TOP TEN CARTOONS OF THE WEEK

Editors prefer cartoons about high gas prices and inflation, but a few more cartoons about the war in Ukraine crept into our Top Ten list of the most reprinted cartoons of the week.

The most popular is actually No. 2, a rearview mirror COVID cartoon by Jeff Koterba, which straddled two weeks so it didn’t hit No. 1, but it was reprinted in over 250 newspapers – that’s a lot.

At Cagle.com, we’ve been syndicating editorial cartoons for over twenty years, and we’ve amassed an archive of over 250,000 cartoons. Every few years there’s a spike in gas prices and these are the cartoons editors want to publish, so I looked back over two decades for some oldies that might look fresh today.

I found some great high gas price cartoons by Tab, a great, retired, Canadian cartoonist who used to draw for the Calgary Sun. I sent these to newspapers looking as fresh and new as they did 17 years ago. That’s one of Tab’s gas price cartoons at No. 9, and editors liked all of Tab’s cartoons.

High gas prices never get old.

#1. Dave Granlund, Cagle.com

#2. Jeff Koterba, Cagle.com

#3. Dave Whamond, Cagle.com

#4. Jeff Koterba, Cagle.com

#5. Christopher Weyant, Boston Globe

#6. Adam Zyglis, Buffalo News

#7. Dick Wright, Cagle.com

#8. John Darkow, Columbia Missourian

#9. Tab, Cagle.com

#10 . Guy Parsons, Cagle.com

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – March 13th, 2022

Yet again, editorial cartoonists were frustrating as editors preferred light cartoons to the more substantive cartoons about the War in Ukraine.

Here are the cartoons that editors chose to print – for the seven days ending  March 13th, 2022. Congratulations to Dave Whamond who again took the #1 spot this week, by a whisker over Bob Englehart’s #2 — but it wasn’t close on the overall measure as Dave dominated this week with three cartoons in the Top Ten.

Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com. These are the cartoons that editors picked last week.

#1

Dave Whamond took the #1 most reprinted spot, by a wide margin.

#2

Bob Englehart took second place with his first of two in the Top Ten.

#3

Dave Whamond also took third place.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – October 30th, 2021

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of the week ending  October 30th, 2021.  Congratulations to Rick McKee who was our most reprinted cartoonist of the week, on the strength of four great Halloween cartoons from earlier in the week.

Rick and I tied for the #1 most reprinted cartoon of the week, with each of our cartoons appearing in approximately 112 newspapers. Rick also has an impressive three cartoons in the Top Ten.  I have two.

Our reader supported site, Cagle.com, still needs you!  Journalism is threatened with the pandemic that has shuttered newspaper advertisers. Some pundits predict that a large percentage of newspapers won’t survive the pandemic economic slump, and as newspapers sink, editorial cartoonists who depend on newspapers sink too, and along with them, our Cagle.com site.

#1

Rick McKee took the #1 spot and has three cartoons in the Top Ten.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – May 15, 2021

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of the week ending May 15th, 2021.

TRUE Crazy Stuff 4!

Here’s a new batch of my old TRUE cartoons. This first one is a self-portrait of younger me, sitting on the toilet, talking on my land-line rotary phone. Looking at the old True cartoons makes me feel young again, until I notice details that make me feel old.

Hillary and a Tempest in a Teapot

Here’s my new one. I was trying to stretch this to make a better tea-party reference to the elephant, but I decided, nah, it is clear enough. Then I thought of putting the GOP elephant in a Fox New t-shirt, and I thought, nah, it is clear enough.

Here’s a Hillary, Benghazi, GOP oldie that will probably never grow stale. Hillary is a wonderful character – I’m looking forward to the campaign!
