We had two lovely exhibitions at the “International Center“, Press Cartoons museum in St Just le Martel, France this year. One of the shows was about Donkeys and Elephants.

Some people talk about cartooning being an international language, but it isn’t, a great example of cartoons that don’t cross borders are American donkey and elephant cartoons, which make no sense to foreign audiences. Our exhibit in France was curated by cartoons historian Olivier Auvray, who invited six cartoonists in our group to show their best donkey/elephant cartoons, which were presented with explanations –even with the explanations, the cartoons seemed seemed pretty difficult for the French fans to comprehend.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Past Week!

President Joe Biden delivered a speech in Philadelphia last week where he called out “MAGA Republicans” and claimed former President Donald Trump and his supporters are a threat to American democracy.

Naturally, our liberal cartoonists supported what Biden said during his speech, while our conservative cartoonists thought he was a hypocrite thanks to his tone and bluntness.

Editors liked cartoons on an interesting mix of topics this week, including Labor Day, space junk, and new British Prime Minister Liz Truss.

LIZ CHENEY LAMENT: TOP TEN CARTOONS

August is typically a slow news month, but between the FBI searching Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate and the national shortage of teachers, there’s been plenty for cartoonists to draw about.

This week, editors loved Chris Weyant’s funny cartoon about confused liberals upset over Liz Cheney’s Republican primary loss. Cartoons about rent hikes, climate change, and the slow return of COVID-19 were also popular.

Trump’s Top Secret Boxes

Here is my cartoon about Trump with his collection of twelve boxes of Top Secret documents. When I finished this and sent it out to newspapers I counted the boxes again and noticed that I had drawn thirteen boxes.  So much for my attempt at accuracy.  It looks like I made Trump’s problem look worse than it really is.

Top Twelve Cartoons of the Week – August 21st, 2021

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of the week ending  August 21st, 2021. For the second week in a row our cartoons performance graph is remarkably flat, with lots of cartoons performing well and no cartoons dominating the choices of editors.

Kudos to both Kevin Siers and Jeff Koterba who tied for the #1 cartoons and for having two cartoons each in the Top Ten; and congrats to Dave Granlund for having three cartoons in the Top Twelve, as well as for being the most reprinted cartoonist of the week.

With a flat graph and more cartoons performing at close to the same number of reprints, we get a lot more ties – this week I posted a Top Twelve (instead of a Top Ten) since we had a four-way tie for 9th place.  The relatively flat graph is a healthy trend and I like seeing more cartoons performing relatively well. Congratulations to all!

Republican Sedition Rotten Tomatoes

Why is it that big news always seems to happen when I’m bogged down in year-end syndicate accounting muck? This is an important time for editorial cartoons even when I’m facing a bunch of tax filing deadlines – so here are a couple of quickies. I revamped an old cartoon with a new speech balloon for today’s revised GOP sedition sedition cartoon that is much better than the oldie that got little ink.

I don’t revise cartoons very often, but this one seemed nice, and I labeled it so the few editors who printed the oldie years ago, can avoid being embarrassed by printing a similar cartoon that some readers might remember.

I have another old favorite that I drew when Barack Obama won his presidential election. This is Republican elephants showing their anguish in the form of Picasso’s Guernica.

What is old is new again – except that it seems to get worse the next time.

Attacking Democracy

It will be interesting to see if the cartoons criticizing Trump will get reprinted this week, after president incited the violence on Capitol Hill.

Newspaper editors don’t like to print cartoons about Trump. I thought I would take a more “optimistic” view than most of the cartoonists who were drawing battered and bruised symbols of democracy – my democracy bounces back.  See my archive here.

Jeff is optimistic too, at least if you look at his eagle cartoons in this order.  I almost started drawing the feet idea with them trampling on the flag, but I didn’t.  Maybe I should.
