RJ was the longtime cartoonist for The St. Louis Post Dispatch and he draws for Roll Call in Washington DC, he’s drawn for Mad Magazine, The New Yorker and a gazillion different places. Election in the Courts

Trump and his minions are scrambling for a way to throw the election into the courts with claims of widespread fraud.

This is a revised version of a cartoon that I drew earlier when Justice Antonin Scalia died.

This wouldn’t be the first time for the Supreme Court to decide to give the presidential election of a Republican. Back in 2000 the decision came as a blow to Al Gore.

The 5-4 court decision was pretty outrageous. This could be the second time a partisan court decides to stop a vote count (or re-count) and decide the winner, if Trump has his way.

At that time I was a regular, local, daily cartoonist for Gannett’s Honolulu Advertiser newspaper in Hawaii. On the day that the Supreme Court decided to make George W. Bush president, I drew this cartoon that my newspaper refused to print.

I defaced the justices who voted to make George W. Bush president. I was pretty angry that day.

Anything can happen. It already has.

Too Close to Call!

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – September 5, 2020

Here are the ten most widely published cartoons of the week (August 29th through September 5th, 2020). As usual, no drawings of president Trump were among the most popular with newspaper editors. Seven of the cartoons are light, life during the pandemic cartoons. Three are “back to school during the pandemic” cartoons, which is still the most popular topic with editors.

Rick McKee runs away with the week, claiming the #1, #4 and #10 spots! I’m impressed! Dave Granlund also had a great week taking #2 and #7. Congrats to Rick and Dave!

Kudos to the other cartoonists who made the Top Ten most reprinted list this week, Kevin Siers, Ed Wexler, Dave Whamond, Bruce Plante, and Jeff Koterba.

Rick McKee dominated the week with this very popular #1 cartoon, along with two more in the Top Ten.

This second place cartoon by Dave Granlund also stood out from the pack with well more reprints than the rest. Dave has two cartoons in the Top Ten this week.

Kevin Siers takes 3rd place with a “back to school” during the pandemic cartoon, a topic that remains the most popular with newspaper editors.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – August 15, 2020

Here are the ten most widely published cartoons of the week (August 8th through August 15th, 2020). As usual, cartoonists drew president Trump in many cartoons, but no drawings of Trump were among the most popular with newspaper editors.

Dave Granlund is on top this week with the #1 and #6 cartoons! Dave Whamond also has an impressive showing with two cartoons in the Top Ten.

Kudos to the other six CagleCartoonists with the most reprinted cartoons this week: John Darkow, Rick McKee, Ed Wexler, Randy Enos, Jeff Koterba and Chris Weyant!

Congratulations yet again to Dave Granlund for his second of two cartoons in the Top Ten. This was the first, new Kamala Harris cartoon posted after see selection as Biden’s VP nominee, something that editors were eager to see.

Kudos to Ed Wexler who is tied for #6 with his first “couple watching TV” cartoon. I warned Ed that “couples watching TV” cartoons are addictive and may consume him (as happened to me).

Thinking of Michael Flynn

I get a cable TV channel that lets me see a view of four news networks at once and I regularly switch back and forth between CNN, BBC, MSNBC and Fox News – and Fox News is a completely different world, especially the past couple of days as they have obsessed over the Michael Flynn story while other news focuses almost exclusively on the pandemic.

One thing I wanted to do in the cartoon was to draw the screaming Democrat donkey with a mask, and the daydreaming, pandemic-disinterested Republican with no mask. It occurred to me – what if I wanted to draw the elephant with a mask; how would I do that? A mask is supposed to cover your nose. Would the elephant have a mask the size of a bed sheet? Would his mask have a hose-like extension for his trunk? If I drew anything like that, would it even look like a mask?

These are important questions for Republicans, but only if they are going to wear masks. Wearing a mask is effective in protecting others, not yourself, so it makes ideological sense why Republicans would not want to wear them … still, if MAGA Republicans did want to wear them, I’d be in cartoon trouble.

Here is the rough sketch for this one, that I drew on a piece of Cagle Cartoons letterhead.

Notice that I thought about drawing the elephant in a Fox News t-shirt, but I decided against it. FoxNews.com used to be a great subscriber to CagleCartoons, but they recently cancelled their subscription. That’s very disappointing and a giant step in their descent into hell.

This post got me to thinking, so I drew this …

Rush to Impeachment!

Lemmings are a standard cliché for cartoonists. I agree with Nancy Pelosi that Trump wants the Democrats to impeach him. Impeachment backfired on the Republicans when they impeached Bill Clinton and I suspect the same thing would happen here, making Trump’s solid base even more solid.

Trumps insistence that he won’t talk to the Democrats until they give up on the investigations sounds a lot like the child psychology used with a two year old.

Trump Toilet

Trump isn’t showing much respect to Congress these days. The president will not comply with any subpoenas from the House committees that are investigating him and the courts can’t do much about it because Trump’s term will be over by the time the courts come to any decisions. My cartoon shows Trump’s attitude about Congress.

This isn’t the first time I’ve drawn Trump on the toilet –here’s an oldie from a couple of years ago when it looked like Trump was spinning out and sinking with some forgettable issue of the moment.

Somehow I think Trump will have more visits to the cartoon toilet before long.

Ilhan Omar

Minnesota congresswoman Ilhan Omar has become a gift to Republicans and a favorite on Fox News. She seems to be unaware of anti-Semitic tropes and stumbles into repeated, ugly slurs against Jews. Many Democrats defend her and an awkward attempt to condemn her statements was so watered down in the House that it was laughable.

Editorial cartoonists have a special responsibility regarding anti-Semitic clichés given the history of Nazi cartoons leading up to the Holocaust. At Cagle.com we have received many ugly cartoon tropes from worldwide cartoonists over the years, particularly from Arabic language cartoonists and Latin American cartoonists. When I talk to the cartoonists about it, they tell me that they were unaware, that it wasn’t their intent; they are generally happy to take the cartoons down and they tell me they appreciate being told about why their cartoons were offensive to an American audience. The most common images depict a Star of David representing Judaism, rather than the Israeli Flag representing Israel, and use images that equate Jews with Nazis, that show Jews crucifying Palestinians as they “crucified Christ,” Jews as rats, as spiders, Jews killing babies, or like vampires drinking baby blood – the whole Nazi panoply of Der Stürmer clichés in cartoons gets repeated frequently around the world, and these cartoonists aren’t used to hearing any push-back from their local readers. Nancy Pelosi seems to see it in the same way with Omar, who Pelosi thinks simply wasn’t aware and hasn’t been educated about the bigotry.

Whatever the reasons are behind Omar’s ugly comments, she is a gift to Republicans, Trump and Fox News. My cartoon from last week shows Democrats wrapped up in Omar’s hijab, to the delight of Republicans.

Trump Giddyap

My new Trump emergency cartoon is inspired by the pushmi-pullyu character from Doctor Dolittle and is something of a cartoon trope. Cartoonists have all drawn this kind of thing before. Still, it is fun to have the Jack-ass be an ass.

Not much different from an old Nickelodeon show I liked, CatDog. I drew CatDog way back in 2002 when HP merged with Compaq.

Things don’t change much.

Howard Schultz

I forgot to post my cartoon from week before last, about Howard Schultz, the prospective independent presidential candidate, billionaire and Starbucks magnate. Schultz threatens to split the vote for a Democratic party candidate, possibly throwing the election to Donald Trump.

The two legged Starbucks mermaid logo is so disturbing that I love to draw it whenever I can. Here’s the original Starbucks logo, that customers didn’t like. See the evolution of the Starbucks logo here.

The logo was intended to depict the merger of two coffee companies, the original Starbucks and Howard Schultz’s company, Il Gornale that purchased Starbucks. Starbucks has a nautical theme to go with the character of Seattle. “Starbuck” was the name of the first mate in the novel Moby Dick.

This two legged, merger-mermaid is nasty, which makes it great fodder for cartoons. I drew the mermaid last year when there was a racism scandal at Starbucks, leading the company to shut down for a day to do racial sensitivity training. This logo-fish-girl would scare anybody!

Women’s March Overshadowed by Shut-down

This weekend’s women’s march would have been much bigger news if the government shut-down hadn’t dominated the news.

I think that’s disappointing. The march deserved more attention.
