Republican Infighting

Right now the House is debating President Trump’s second impeachment and a few, prominent Republicans have indicated their support for impeachment – a stark departure from the last impeachment that has split the Republican party.
The Republicans who are arguing against impeachment are described as cowed by Trump and fearful of their on political future and safety. I don’t believe it. It sounds to me like these guys drank the Kool-Aid and believe what they are saying.

Trump’s claims of a stolen election likely led to the election of the two Senate candidates in Georgia and Democratic control of the Senate. A few Republicans, like Liz Cheney and possibly Mitch McConnell can see that the GOP faces self-destruction if the continue to support their fascist fans.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – January 9, 2021

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of last week (January 2nd through January 9th 2021).

This week was dominated by the news of President Trump inciting a mob to assault the Capitol and 7 out of the 10 cartoons are on this topic, and the three cartoons on other topics were drawn before Wednesday’s insurrection. Editors resist reprinting cartoons that depict president Trump, but the news this week was severe enough that two drawings of Trump made the Top Ten.

The Top Ten cartoons are what most readers see since only 20% of the cartoons get 80% of the reprints. This week the curve was flattened a bit as the top cartoons got less reprints than usual and more cartoons did relatively well.

Another fascinating thing about the week is the incredible performance of Jeff Koterba who has the #1, #3, #4 and #8 cartoons on the Top Ten list, dominating American newspaper editorial pages for the week!

Congratulations to the other CagleCartoonists who made the Top Ten list this week: John Darkow, Ed Wexler, Dave Whamond, Steve Sack, Chris Weyant and Adam Zyglis.

Our Top Ten is a measure of how many editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 62 cartoonists in our CagleCartoons.com syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com

#1

Jeff Koterba wins the week with this cartoon showing our battered democracy.

#2

Dave Granlund wins second place with a pandemic cartoon drawn before the assault on the Capitol.

#3

Jeff Koterba draws a happy ending to his #1 cartoon.

#4

Jeff Koterba also takes 4th place with this New Years cartoon, drawn before Wednesday’s Capitol assault.

#5

Ed Wexler‘s cartoon about Trump’s phone call to the Georgia Secretary of State was also drawn before Wednesday’s insurrection.

#5

Dave Whamond is tied for 5th place.

#7

Steve Sack snags 7th place with another rare drawing of Trump on the Top Ten.

#8

Jeff Koterba claims 8th place with the fourth of his incredible four cartoons on the Top Ten.

#9

Chris Weyant takes 9th place.

#10

Adam Zyglis rounds out the list at #10.

Republican Sedition Rotten Tomatoes

Why is it that big news always seems to happen when I’m bogged down in year-end syndicate accounting muck? This is an important time for editorial cartoons even when I’m facing a bunch of tax filing deadlines – so here are a couple of quickies. I revamped an old cartoon with a new speech balloon for today’s revised GOP sedition sedition cartoon that is much better than the oldie that got little ink.

I don’t revise cartoons very often, but this one seemed nice, and I labeled it so the few editors who printed the oldie years ago, can avoid being embarrassed by printing a similar cartoon that some readers might remember.

I have another old favorite that I drew when Barack Obama won his presidential election. This is Republican elephants showing their anguish in the form of Picasso’s Guernica.

What is old is new again – except that it seems to get worse the next time.

Attacking Democracy

It will be interesting to see if the cartoons criticizing Trump will get reprinted this week, after president incited the violence on Capitol Hill.

Newspaper editors don’t like to print cartoons about Trump. I thought I would take a more “optimistic” view than most of the cartoonists who were drawing battered and bruised symbols of democracy – my democracy bounces back.  See my archive here.

Here are a couple from Jeff Koterba.

Jeff is optimistic too, at least if you look at his eagle cartoons in this order.  I almost started drawing the feet idea with them trampling on the flag, but I didn’t.  Maybe I should.

Here’s Bill Day’s battered eagle.

Bulgarian CagleCartoonist Christo “Komar” Komarnitsky drew Trump assaulting the Statue of Liberty.

RJ Matson is another one of the all time great editorial cartoonists!  RJ was the longtime cartoonist for The St. Louis Post Dispatch and he draws for Roll Call in Washington DC, he’s drawn for Mad Magazine, The New Yorker and a gazillion different places. I went through our archives to select my favorite Matson Christmas cartoons – enjoy!

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – December 12, 2020

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of last week (December 5th through December 12th 2020).

Six of the cartoons combined Christmas with Covid themes, which is clearly what newspaper editors want to see right now. As usual, no drawings of Trump or Biden made the Top Ten, even as transition problems and Trump’s last lawsuit dominated cable news. No cartoons about foreign issues were popular, despite some excellent cartoons about Boris Johnson, the EU and failing Brexit trade negotiations.

The Top Ten cartoons are what readers see since only 20% of the cartoons get 80% of the reprints.

Rick McKee won the week with a strong #1 cartoon,  Jeff Koterba and John Darkow each had two cartoons in the Top Ten. Great work, gentlemen.

Congratulations to the other cartoonists with the most reprinted cartoons of the week, RJ MatsonPat ByrnesNate Beeler, Dave Granlund and John Cole.

Our Top Ten is a measure of how many editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 62 cartoonists in our CagleCartoons.com syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com

#1

Rick McKee wins the week with this very popular Christmas/pandemic cartoon.

#2

RJ Matson takes second place with this impressive cartoon that he tells me he created in Photoshop in only two hours. Unbelievable.

#3

Jeff Koterba snags third place with this Christmas/COVID combo cartoon.

#4

Jeff Koterba takes 4th place with another Christmas/COVID combo cartoon.

#5

Nate Beeler takes 5th place with this Christmas/COVID combo cartoon.

#6

Pat Byrnes claims 6th place with this COVID cartoon.

#7

John Darkow claims 7th place with a cartoon implying that 2020 was a bad year and 2021 will be better – one of the most popular themes for editors.

#8

John Darkow wins 8th place with this Chuck Yeager memorial cartoon. There was a time when obit cartoons were the most popular with editors, but those days have been drowned out by the pandemic.

#9

Dave Granlund nabs 8th place with the only cartoon about the ugly presidential transition that dominates the news, but not the ink. The candy coating of a 2020 year cartoon makes it a cartoon that editors will swallow.

#10

John Cole takes 10th place with a cartoon about virtual learning during the pandemic. Education during the pandemic is another favorite theme for editors.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – August 8, 2020

Here are the ten most widely published cartoons of the week (August 1st through August 8th, 2020). For the first time since March, a drawing of Trump has made the Top Ten in John Darkow’s #8 cartoon showing Trump as a dog biting a postman. Trump’s attacks on the Post Office are a very popular topic right now (but usually without showing Trump). Seven of the Top Ten cartoons reference the pandemic, two are about the Post Office, and one is about Joe Biden.

Jeff Koterba dominates the week with three cartoons in the Top Ten, taking the #1, #4 and #6 spots! Steve Sack has an impressive showing with #2 and #3.

Kudos to our other five cartoonists with the most reprinted cartoons this week: RJ Matson, Dave Whamond, John Darkow, Rick McKee and Kevin Siers!

Our Top Ten is a measure of how many editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 62 cartoonists in our syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com.

#1

Congratulations to Jeff Koterba who drew the #1 most reprinted cartoon this week, the first of THREE cartoons in the Top Ten!

#2

Steve Sack has TWO in the Top Ten this week, taking second place.

#3

Steve Sack also takes third place.

#4

Congratulations again to Jeff Koterba with his second of three cartoons in the Top Ten.

#5

RJ Matson, claims 5th place.

#6

Congratulations yet again to Jeff Koterba with his third of three cartoons in the Top Ten.

#6

Dave Whamond is tied for 6th place.

#8

John Darkow is tied for 8th place with the first drawing of Trump that has made the Top Ten since March.

#8

Rick McKee is tied for 8th place with this Joe Biden cartoon. There aren’t many cartoons about Joe Biden, and editors are looking for them.

#10

Kevin Siers takes the ten spot.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – August 1, 2020

Here are the ten most widely published cartoons of the week (July 25 through August 1, 2020). As usual, no drawings of President Trump are among the most reprinted cartoons –and we had lots of cartoonists draw Trump this week.

Christopher Weyant takes the the #1 spot, running away with the week by a wide margin!

No one has two cartoons in the Top Ten list this week, so kudos to our other nine cartoonists with the most reprinted cartoons this week:  Jeff Koterba, Rick McKee, John Cole, RJ Matson, Steve Sack, Dave Granlund, John Darkow, Nate Beeler and Bruce Plante.

Our Top Ten is a measure of how many editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 62 cartoonists in our syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com.

#1

Congratulations to Christopher Weyant, who drew the #1 most reprinted cartoon this week!

#2

Jeff Koterba takes second place.

#3

Rick McKee takes the #3 spot. There are two Biden cartoons in the Top Ten this week. There are very few cartoons drawn about Biden, and clearly editors would like to see more.

#4

Steve Sack is part of a three-way tie for 4th place.

#4

Here’s RJ Matson, also tied for 4th place.

#4

John Cole shares 4th place with a “back to school” COVID cartoon, still a popular topic with editors.

#7

Here’s Dave Granlund in seventh place with another “back to school,” COVID cartoon.

#8

John Darkow is in 8th place. Trump’s crazy comments about his simple cognitive test were a popular topic with editors, but only if the cartoons didn’t show Trump.

#9

Nate Beeler takes the #9 position with the second Biden cartoon on the Top Ten, and the second cognitive test cartoon.

#10

Bruce Plante takes the ten spot.
